Movie Review: Snatched

Movie Review: Snatched

I had high hopes for Snatched, which marked Goldie Hawn's return to the big screen, for the first time since 2002's The Banger Sisters. Unfortunately, although the film started off promising, it slowly became less funny throughout.

Emily (Amy Schumer) is about to embark on a vacation to Ecuador with her musician boyfriend, Michael (Randall Park, Fresh Off the Boat), when he suddenly breaks up with her. Since her vacation is nonrefundable, she needs to find someone else to be her +1 for the trip. After all of her friends decline, she decides to ask her mother, Linda (Hawn), a super cautious woman who nowadays rarely leaves her house. Once they arrive in Ecuador, Emily meets a cute guy, James (Tom Bateman), who eventually ends up being their downfall - he arranges for them to be kidnapped and held at ransom. Emily and Linda must escape and somehow find their way to the American embassy so that they can get back to the United States.

Hawn's character is very similar to my own mom in this movie, which made me laugh - she declares "You need at least two years to plan a vacation," among other gems. Schumer pretty much plays the same character in all of her movies (see: Trainwreck), but it works for her, and she's very good at that sort of role; this time, however, it was the script's fault that the movie wasn't as good throughout as it was in the beginning. I also couldn't take Randall Park seriously as her musician boyfriend, since I am a big fan of Fresh Off the Boat (he plays the dad there). Other supporting roles included Wanda Sykes and Joan Cusack as "platonic friends" (according to Sykes' character) who end up helping to retrieve Emily and Linda; I enjoy Sykes in every movie she's in, and she was great here too.

Maybe see this movie. Definitely save it for a rental or matinee (don't pay full price). I'd be curious to know why Hawn chose this movie to mark her return to the screen, because although it will surely do well at the box office, I feel like with her star power, she could have chosen a better film. Snatched is still worth watching, especially for its funny beginning, but it's a movie that had the potential to be hilarious, in my opinion.

Snatched is currently playing in theaters, and is rated R with a runtime of 91 minutes. 3 stars out of 5.
