Movie Review: Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates

I watched the red band trailer for Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates before attending the screening, and I was convinced that the film was going to be over-the-top raunchy and not that great. Although it definitely was raunchy, it was actually pretty funny, and I found myself enjoying it.

Mike and Dave Stangle (Adam Devine, Zac Efron) are pumped that their baby sister, Jeanie (Sugar Lyn Beard), is getting married in Hawaii. However, their parents have a sit-down with them and say that both boys NEED to bring dates to the wedding, the reason being that every other wedding or family event that they've been to has ended disastrously, mostly because they attended solo and hit on all the women there. Mike and Dave decide to post an ad on Craigslist, which of course attracts thousands of women, since they are offering an all expenses-paid trip to Hawaii.

Tatiana (Aubrey Plaza) and Alice (Anna Kendrick) see Mike and Dave on The Wendy Williams Show after their Craiglist ad goes viral, and Tatiana is excited about a free trip to Hawaii for her and Alice; she rigs it so they "randomly" meet the boys outside a bar one day, and soon enough, Mike and Dave choose them to go with them, thinking they are "nice girls." When their true colors start to show later on in the trip, though, all hell breaks loose, and Mike and Dave slowly start to realize they aren't the "nice girls" that they pretended to be.

Yes, see this movie, but only if you fall into a certain niche. My parents didn't really like the film, so I'd recommend this movie for those in the 17-40 age group; obviously, if this genre (raunchy comedy) is something you like, and you don't fall into that age group, you would probably still like the movie. Jeanie is supposed to be Mike and Dave's little sister, which I didn't really believe (in real life, the actress is 2 years older than Devine and 6 years older than Efron), but other than that, most of the jokes were funny, and the movie didn't let its raunchiness overtake all of the jokes, if that makes sense. This film should do well at the box office too, solely based on its star power (the four lead actors plus others, like Stephen Root [Office Space] and Kumail Nanjiani [Silicon Valley]), and it's a fun choice to see if you're looking for a comedy to watch.

Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates is in theaters today, July 8th, and is rated R with a runtime of 98 minutes. 3.5 stars out of 5.
