The death of John F. Kennedy remains among the most compelling mysteries of the 20th century. But what may be more significant are the actions he took that provoked such extreme resentment. The film brings to light how JFK was subverted by his own advisors and considers how the world might be different had he lived.

Review: Rumtoberfest at Bahama Breeze, through Nov. 3rd

Bahama Breeze in Troy, MI
I'm writing this blog post on a very full stomach, as I've just returned from the Troy, MI Bahama Breeze location after sampling their Rumtoberfest offerings.

I first wrote about Bahama Breeze back in February, when they introduced their late-night happy hour promotion, which is ongoing. This month, the restaurant is celebrating Rumtoberfest with a great selection of rum drinks, two of which I was able to try.

Bahama Breeze's signature drink for this month is called the Curly Tail, which is named for the colorful lizards that you can find in the islands ... and on my drink:

Curly Tail drink. Check out the lizards!

Bahama Breeze is also serving flights of "sipping rums," including Clément V.S.O.P. Rhum Agricole, Zaya Gran Reserva 12 Year, and Atlantico “Private Cask” Rum. In addition, each week on their Facebook page, the restaurant is giving away a trip for two to the Bahamas! You read that right - each week, a new winner is selected, for a five-night stay including airfare. This is the last week of Rumtoberfest, so make sure to get your entries in!

I was also able to try the Goombay Smash, which includes Captain Morgan spiced rum and Myers' Original Dark Rum with fresh orange and pineapple juice. Overall I preferred the Curly Tail as it was a bit sweeter, but the Goombay Smash was great too.

Goombay Smash

I am also a big fan of Bahama Breeze's happy hour (Monday through Friday, 4-6pm) as all of their appetizers are half off - I regularly go there with my book club and with friends. My favorites are the empanadas (both beef and chicken), the chips and pico de gallo, and the onion rings.

The manager of the Troy location, Jill, was also very helpful, and she told us that their key lime pie takes six hours to make from scratch, and it's made fresh every morning. She also gave us some interesting history about the Troy location, which opened in 2000, and why the layout is set up how it is.

Make sure to check out Bahama Breeze's Rumtoberfest before it's gone - this Sunday, November 3rd is the last day! In the metro Detroit area, you can find the restaurant in Troy and in Livonia.

You can find Bahama Breeze online at their website, on Twitter, and on Instagram, as well.

*Disclosure: I received free food and drinks in exchange for a Rumtoberfest review. The opinions expressed here, however, are my own.

Movie Review: 12 Years a Slave

12 Years a Slave

12 Years a Slave
has been receiving a lot of Oscar buzz, and you will find that it is rightfully deserved. In addition to its fantastic cast, the performances in the film are great, and the material is based on a true story: a book of the same title written by Solomon Northup, a free man who was kidnapped and sold into slavery. This is a movie well worth seeing in the theater, and it should do very well come awards season.

Solomon Northup (Chiwetel Ejiofor) lives in New York with his wife and two young children. His wife departs for a few weeks each year to cook at a school, and she brings their children with them. When Solomon is offered a job playing violin at the circus during this time, he accepts; one night after a bit too much to drink, however, he awakens to find himself shackled in a remote underground bunker of sorts. He has been kidnapped by slave traders, and every time he protests that he is a free man, he gets beaten up; eventually, he accepts his new role, of "Platt," and doesn't tell his masters about his past identity. He gets shuttled from master to master, each one worse than the last, until one day he meets a white man who has been hired to work on the plantation (Brad Pitt), and finds that his luck may change.

Review and GIVEAWAY: 9thandElm.com ($400 in prizes!), ends 10/31

Disclosure:  This is a Fashionista Event. I was given a promotional item to review by 9thandElm.com to share my opinions about the website. All opinions are my own.

Whether I'm going to the movies, out for dinner, or just hanging out with friends, I like to accessorize with jewelry. I actually don't let myself buy earrings anymore because I have so many of them, but I'm always on the hunt for a good necklace or bracelet.

There's a new website in town that gives you designer fashion at reduced prices, named 9thandElm.com (9thelm.com), and recently I was given the opportunity to review the website in exchange for $70 in credit.

About 9thandElm.com:
9thandElm.com was founded by Clay and Elly Bethune in the spring of 2013 with a mission to bring its members fabulous fashion from the best handmade and independent designers. We realize it is extremely difficult to sort through and discover handmade fashion geared towards the "fashionista." Search no longer. Exclusive deals handpicked by our buyers will be delivered daily to our users inbox.

You'll never guess what I ordered first ... earrings!! Ha. All of the earrings on the site were too pretty to resist. I ended up ordering these, the "Blue Chandelier Earrings" - I'm a huge fan of vintage-looking pieces, and I also love dangly earrings.

Yes/No Films 9thandElm
So gorgeous!

I wear the earrings to work or any place I want to look nice, and I've received a ton of compliments on them already. I have one shirt that almost exactly matches the blue in the earrings, as well, and they look nice together.

For my second piece of jewelry, I chose one of the first pieces that caught my eye, also very vintage-looking - a Swarovski Crystal Emerald Green Necklace, which you can find here. This is a piece that I will want to wear for special occasions, although it could also be used to dress up a nice blouse or dress for work, as well.

The artists themselves are responsible for shipping their jewelry or items, so I received two separate packages, both very nicely put together:

J&J Jewels sent me the Swarovski necklace

The earrings were wrapped very nicely!

You can follow 9thandElm.com at their website, as well as on social media:

And if you like what you see ... enter the giveaway below!! There will be THREE winners, including a $200 gift certificate to the site and two $100 gift certificates. Please be advised that by signing up, you agree to be subscribed to the 9th and Elm newsletter. U.S./Canada only, please. Contest ends on 10/31.

Guest Post - A Beginner’s Guide to Latin American Cinema: My Top 5

Today we have a guest post by Laura Moulden about Latin American cinema, including her top five movies and a bit of general background about the genre.

Laura Moulden
First thing’s first, this is a beginner’s guide because I am a beginner. A veritable newbie to the film industry, I have just completed my first ever ten minute script. And this recent foray into film has led me on a path of discovery. Moving away from Hollywood and into more niche areas, I’ve discovered a world of amazing new titles that have opened my eyes to the power and complexities of modern cinema. Most recently: Latin American style.

So, a bit of background… Latin American cinema is a mish-mash of cinematic styles and textures originating predominantly from Mexico, Argentina and Brazil. State and foreign films have been and still are the main channels of film-making, but in recent years, home-grown, artsy films like La Mujer Sin Cabeza (The Headless Woman) have become more commonplace.

Now with an estimated 600 million film-goers local cinema is contributing increasingly to the region’s economic strength – but it’s also starting to put South America on the map. In fact, worldwide audiences have flocked to see its films including City of God (2002), Whiskey (2004), and the critically acclaimed Pans Labyrinth (2006). And as the industry continues to move into the mainstream, several airlines are now offering Latin American cinema as part of their in-flight entertainment.

Funding is still an issue, however. Even prolific screenwriters like Lucrecia Martel have trouble finding the cash to get their films made. The current structure of the industry is to reward firms and companies who privately fund films, with tax deductions. However, this model raises the question of whether cinema is restricted by the cautious nature of entrepreneurs, anxious about what they associate with their brand.

Nonetheless, whilst the industry is undoubtedly heading in the right direction, here are my five must-see films for a Latin-American initiation:

The secrets in their eyes
credit: wikipedia.com

5. El Secreto De Sus Ojos (The Secret in their Eyes)

Argentinian cinema enjoyed an industry high with El Secreto De Sus Ojos (The Secret in their Eyes). Retired legal counsellor, Benjamin, is writing a novel based on his own life story to confront the ghost of a past homicide case and unrequited love. But when he gets to work, he has no idea it will leave him searching for answers that haven't yet been solved.

The film won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film at the 82nd Academy Awards in 2008.

4. E Proibido Fumar (Smoke Gets In Your Eyes)

A twisted love story in São Paulo, ‘Smoke Gets In Your Eyes’ follows the heart-breaking story of lonely forty-something, Baby, whose only meaningful relationship is with her cigarettes. That is, until hot musician, Max, moves in next door and the pair embark on a heady romance, prompting Baby to quit smoking.

But the course of true love never did run smooth, and when Max’s former flame Estelinha starts to spend more time on the scene, insecure Baby is overcome with jealousy. Determined to find out what’s going on, Baby tries to follow Estelinha one night in her car. But tragedy strikes when she accidentally hits her nemesis, killing her.

Will anybody uncover the truth? And will Baby ever learn to live with her guilt?

3. La Mujer Sin Cabeza (The Headless Woman)

La Mujer Sin Cabeza follows the poignant tale of an Argentinian woman, whose life is erased by her male family members after she suspects herself of being involved in a hit and run incident.

An interesting interpretation of the film’s symbolism, expressed by The New York Times, is that is a meditation on Argentina’s historical memory, as the protagonist’s silent disavowal of responsibility for her crime is juxtaposed with the country’s silence during its dictatorship.

2. Cidade de Deus (City of God)

Based on true events and characters, the ‘City of God’ is not for the faint-hearted. A classic piece of cinema, this gritty portrayal of ghetto life through adolescence is described by many as nothing short of stunning.

Brutally unflinching, the film touches on the unthinkable told through the eyes of a young man trying to make something of himself as a photographer in a place where drug lords are king and children killing children is an everyday occurrence.

1. El Laberinto del Fauno (Pan’s Labyrinth)

Pan's Labyrinth

Last but by no means least, Pan’s Labyrinth is the twisted fairytale of Ophelia, an adolescent girl on a mystical quest to take back control of her kingdom.

Pitted against a bleak backdrop of fascist Spain, this truly original film is bursting with all the elements of a great fairytale – fauns, foes and faeries – taking you through a myriad of twists and gruesome turns.

So there you have it; my top five South American films. What do you think? Do these titles nail it or have I missed out some essential Latino titles?

TICKET GIVEAWAY: Autoluminescent, Tues. 10/22 at the Maple Theater (Detroit area) - 5 pairs

movie ticket giveaway Detroit
After a short break, we're back with the Gathr film series giveaways this week! Autoluminescent will be playing on Tuesday, October 22nd, at 7:30pm at the Maple Theater (Bloomfield Hills, MI).

Film synopsis:
From myth to legend Rowland Howard appeared on the early Melbourne punk scene like a phantom out of Kafkaesque Prague or Bram Stoker’s Dracula. A beautifully gaunt and gothic aristocrat, the unique distinctive fury of his guitar style shot him directly into the imagination of a generation. He was impeccable, the austerity of his artistry embodied in his finely wrought form, his obscure tastes and his intelligently wry wit. He radiated a searing personal integrity that never seemed to tarnish. Despite the trials and tribulations of his career, in an age of makeover and reinvention, Rowland Howard never ‘sold out’.

With recent and moving interviews, archival interviews and other fascinating and original footage, AUTOLUMINESCENT traces the life of Rowland S Howard. Capturing moments with the man himself and intimate missives from those who knew him behind closed doors; words and images etch light into what has always been the mysterious dark.

Autoluminescent is a dynamic feature-length interplay of archive and interview – one that combines rare photo stills and fascinating original footage from the late 1970s, ’80s, ‘90s and through to the present to create a remarkable confluence of the shared influences that shaped the punk and post-punk movement both here and overseas. Through the microcosm that is Rowland S. Howard, Autoluminescent examines a riveting personal story, but also one of a generation caught between the marketing demographics of the Baby Boomers and Generation X, a generation sometimes called ‘The Blank Generation’.

Movie Review: Captain Phillips

Tom Hanks

Captain Phillips is based on the true story of Somali pirates boarding an American freighter in 2009 in the hopes of holding the crew and cargo hostage for ransom. From what I later read about the story, the movie follows it very closely, and Tom Hanks should get an Oscar nomination for his role in the film.

Captain Richard Phillips (Hank) embarks on the Maersk Alabama, heading towards Mombasa, Kenya, while carrying cargo and supplies for Africans. Soon, however, the ship is hijacked by Somali pirates, who are overjoyed to learn that it's an American ship - it means a big pay day for them. Captain Phillips saw them coming, and his crew hid in the steam/boiler room, but the pirates want to look around the ship, and he's worried that they'll find the crew. He makes a deal with them: he'll give them the $30,000 in the ship's safe as well as the lifeboat, as long as they get off the ship. They agree, but at the last minute, they steal him too, and he's stuck as a hostage until another deal can be negotiated to get him back safely.

GIVEAWAY: DreamWorks Movie Bundle, including Shrek the Musical (ends 10/20)

The Top DreamWorks Characters to Watch This Halloween

Available on DVD October 15th

The approach of Halloween means that the weather is getting
cooler and it’s the perfect time of year for family movie nights on the couch

at home. All of the scary movies being shown on TV aren’t exactly family
friendly, so as a parent you may be finding it difficult to come up with things
to watch with your little ones. Luckily for you, DreamWorks is releasing three
fantastic films on DVD this month! Below, you can find out more about the
characters to be watching in these family-friendly titles this Halloween.

Shrek the Musical

The greatest fairy tale never told comes to life as never before in DreamWorks’ Shrek The Musical, the highly acclaimed Broadway production based on the smash-hit movie. Called a “triumph of comic imagination” (Elysa Gardner, USA Today) that “never stints on spectacle or laughs” (David Rooney, Variety), Shrek The Musical received eight 2009 Tony Award® nominations including Best Musical, winning Best Costume Design of a Musical (Tim Hatley) and received a Grammy Award® nomination for Best Musical Show Album.

Shrek

Shrek may not want to welcome visitors to his home in the swamp, but this big green ogre
would make a fun guest in your home this Halloween! Although he puts up a tough

front, Shrek has a soft spot in his heart for those he cares about, especially Donkey and Fiona.  This goofy guy brings the laughs with his Scottish-Irish accent and one-liners! He’s also great for
scaring off enemies with his stinky breath, huge size, and frightening yell.

Monsters vs. Aliens: Cloning Around

Get ready for a world of hilarious monster mischief and alien antics in this

all-new animated TV series inspired by DreamWorks Animation’s ginormous hit

movie Monsters vs. Aliens.

Join team leader Susan, muscle-bound Link, ingenious Dr. Cockroach, Ph.D., and

B.O.B., the gelatinous blob, as the residents of the government containment

area embark on fun-filled adventures under the not-too-watchful eye of General
Monger!

B.O.B

B.O.B., short for Benzoate Ostylezene Bicarbonate, got his name when he was
accidentally created in a laboratory from some scientists experimenting with

chemically- and genetically-altered food products. This one-eyed blue blob was
held in captivity in Area Fifty-Something for decades, but he still has a
friendly personality and contagious smile. Since B.O.B is a large gelatinous
mass, he can change his shape easily and absorb any object. Although he has no
brain, B.O.B. is quite intelligent! This big, blue blob is exactly the person
you want by your side on a creepy Halloween night.

Dr. Cockroach, Ph.D.

An intellectual mad scientist, Dr. Cockroach, Ph.D. is known for bursting into
psychotic laughter while completing his experiments. But, don’t be fooled. Dr.

Cockroach has not always been this way. In the 60’s he developed a device that
would allow humans to live a lifespan similar to that of a cockroach. When his
creation went wrong, Dr. Cockroach came away with the head of a bug and the
ability to climb walls and digest garbage just like cockroaches. His
intelligence and lifespan make him a force to be reckoned with!

Kung Fu Panda: Scorpion Sting

Get ready for more high-kicking action and fur-flying fun in this awesome animated
TV series based on the Academy Award®-Nominated hit movieKung Fu Panda*! He may not be your typical warrior, but Po packs an arsenal of martial arts skills as big as his

heart...and his stomach. Always ready to fight for what’s right, Po and the
Furious Five—Tigress, Monkey, Mantis, Crane and Viper—face exotic dangers at
every turn, including a pair of magic shoes with an evil “sole,” and Scorpion,
one of the sharpest villains in all the land!

Po

The courageous dragon warrior, Po Ping, is always up for a new adventure. Although
Po is not your typical Kung Fu warrior, he uses his personality and his

strengths to solve problems and protect those who need him most. He has an
excitement for life and is determined to be the best warrior that he can
possibly be. Sometime Po can be a little immature and rambunctious, but he has
a kind heart and knows the importance of family.

Tigress

A vital member to the Furious Five, Tigress has unmatchable strength and bravery.  She is a master at Kung Fu and at one point was considered to be destined for the title of Dragon Warrior. Although her short temper can still appear sometimes, Tigress has learned to be more friendly

and calm. At times she is quiet and less sociable than the other members of the

Furious Five. Overall, she possesses a strength and dignity that makes others
admire her.

Movie Review: Gravity

Sandra Bullock, George Clooney, Alfonso Cuaron
This review is hard to write, because Gravity is a unique movie. On one hand, the visuals were amazing - it really felt like the characters were in space. On the other, the characters aren't really developed at all, save for a few facts thrown here and there, and I wanted more character development. It wasn't really my kind of movie but if you see movies for the special effects and not the plot/characters, you'll be dazzled by it.

Astronauts Dr. Ryan Stone (Sandra Bullock) and Matt Kowalsky (George Clooney) are working on their ship when their mission is aborted and they're told to head back to their ship right away: the Russians have fired a missile into their own satellite, and debris from the attack is heading straight towards them at a rate of 10,000 miles per hour. They end up being too slow, and debris hits their ship; when they get back to the ship, they find the other astronaut who was outside of the ship, plus the rest of the crew, dead. Matt is the "driver," the more experienced of the two, and Ryan is the scientist; Matt quickly takes control and makes a plan of action. They're running out of oxygen, however, and they have to get to the International Space Station to even have a chance of surviving, and being able to re-enter the Earth's atmosphere.

Movie Review: Runner Runner

Ben Affleck, Justin Timberlake, Gemma Arterton

Runner Runner looked like a slick gambling movie based on its trailer, and most of that "coolness" definitely was portrayed on-screen as well. It's a good choice for a matinee, but I wouldn't buy a full-price ticket for it - it's a fun film but definitely a "popcorn movie."

Richie Furst (Justin Timberlake) is working on his Masters degree in finance at Princeton. The dean calls him into his office to warn him that gambling on campus is illegal - Furst is an affiliate for a gambling site called Midnight Black, where he steers students to the site in exchange for a commission. Richie is in need of $60K in tuition, and since his income has now been cut off, he heads to the site to do some gambling. He loses all of his money, however, and one of his computer-savvy friends finds out that the website actually cheated him. Richie hops on a plane to Costa Rica, where Midnight Black is based, to get a one-on-one with Ivan Block (Ben Affleck), the founder and CEO of the site. He actually does find a way to talk with Block, and Block pays him back his money AND offers him a job there ... with a 7 figure salary the first year and 8 figures for the second.
